Care of Your Pastel Art pastel portrait

Due to the nature of soft pastels you should take extra care when handling the artwork.

Unwrap carefully and avoiding touching the drawn areas of the artwork as pastel is a delicate medium and susceptible to smudging.

Pastel art should be framed behind glass with a mount to prevent contact with the glass.

If you are unsure on framing, I advise that you have your portrait professionally framed.

Photo Reference

In order for me to create a detailed pet portrait I will require a detailed reference photo of your pet to work from.

Some tips to get a good image of your pet are to take photographs in natural light, this could be outside in the daylight or indoors near a good source of daylight, such as a large window. Daylight will show the true colours of your pets coat for me to get a more accurate likeness in the portrait.

Avoid taking photographs in dark shadowy places as this will reduce the detail and alter true colours.

Take photos about a metre from the subject, try to fill the frame by zooming in, rather than moving too close as this will alter the perception and could make your pet look out of proportion.

Try to get angles of them face on to the camera, position yourself at eye level with your pet and try to get a clear focus on the eyes, avoid using a flash.

A high resolution photograph taken in good light will show much better fine detail and not turn blurry when zooming in. I draw what I on the reference photos when creating your pets portrait. If I'm looking at blurred images its difficult to add detail that's not there and will it may affect the quality of the detail in the artwork.
